A Quick Book Review: Beauty by Christina Chiu

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Synopsis: Amy Wong is reaching for it all as an up-and-coming fashion designer. But that perfect life remains out of grasp as she contends with the brutal world of fashion and the realities of raising a small child. Mothers will recognize the wisps of “Is this it?” that sometimes compete with the fierce love that is motherhood. We follow Amy’s life, her ups and many downs, and celebrate with her the clarity that comes from looking back at life’s struggles and realizing you’ve become stronger because of them.

Beauty reads as a smarter 50 Shades of Gray mixed with a dash of Crazy Rich Asians and a grittier The Devil Wears Prada.

Genre: Literary Fiction

Hook: A Woman Finds Herself in the Brutal World of Fashion and Motherhood

Fun Fact: Beauty won the 2040 Book Award from Sante Fe Writer’s Project.

Full Disclosure: I received this book to review from Sante Fe Writer’s Project, but everything in this review is my own opinion.

Time of Year to Read: Any time, but it would be fun to read leading up to/during New York Fashion Week.

Would I Recommend This to Other Busy Parents: Yes, especially if you enjoyed Project Runway.

Similar Reads: An R-Rated version of The Devil Wears Prada.
