Between the pages of a book is a lovely place to be…especially snuggled in with loved ones! I was chatting with my friend about whether or not we have our holiday shopping done yet. I told her that I really wanted to focus on the spirit of the holidays and enjoy it. Less stressing out over “things” and more fun moments and memories made.
One simple way to achieve this is to offer books as Holiday gifts.
Here are 5 reasons why books make the best holiday gifts:
1. Books Can Be Read All Year Round
In addition to the hot new toy, consider putting a few books under the tree. They might not be as exciting as the latest gadget, but a book will probably get more use in the long run.
2. Books Build Vocabulary
We all know the importance of reading with children. No matter if it’s a nonfiction or fiction, serious or silly, reading builds vocabulary in children. So you can sneak in some language arts during the holiday break and long after!
3. Books Lead to Discussions
What are you reading? What do you think will happen next? What was your favorite part? There are so many ways to engage in a discussion with your children before, during and after reading together. Give the gift of having an easy-to-start discussion with your kids!
4. Books Are Simple Gifts That Last a Lifetime
There are no annoying sounds, flashing lights or batteries involved with a book (well, with most of them anyway). I have books from my childhood that still produce memories to this day when I see their covers.
5. Books Are Super Easy to Wrap
Mostly in a square or rectangle, even I, the world’s worst gift wrapper, can easily wrap a book.
Here are a few of my favorite books:
Journey to Constellation Station by Lindsay C. Barry and Jamin Hoyle
The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems
The Z Was Zapped by Chris Van Allsburg
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi and Ronald Barrett
Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg
